Located in Geauga County, Middlefield is a combination of both the old and the modern world. Middlefield boasts itself as the second largest Amish settlement (over 10,000 between Middlefield, Burton & Mesopotamia) in Ohio. It is also the largest indust
rial community in Geauga County. Traveling the back roads north of town one will see living history where daily life goes on without modern conveniences. You will not see electric lines nor telephone poles. You will see beautifully kept farms, small Am
ish school houses and land prepared the way it was done 100 years ago.
MESOPOTAMIA
Mesopotamia means "between two rivers." The two rivers are the Grand to the east and the Cuyahoga to the west. Ancient Mesopotamia, now a part of Iraq, was located between two rivers called the Tigris and the Eupharates. Mesopotamia (which everyone cal
ls Mespo) has an extraordinary Commons that is a quarter mile long and five-eighths of a mile around. It's surrounded by 28 buildings; 21 of them date from before the Civil War, and all but two are from the nineteenth century. Mesopotamia is in the Nati
onal Register of Historic Places. Orginally the Commons gave villagers a grazing area for livestock, while yards were enclosed with picket fences to keep in the children. Mesopotamia, part of the "Great Western Reserve" is predominately an Amish populat
ed community. It is a town that has changed little over nearly two centuries.
BURTON
Burton is the home of the Geauga County Historical Society's Century Village, a quaint setting of old-fashioned buildings and an operating store. The lovely park in the heart of the village has a working log cabin where every year maple syrup products are
made and sold. Just north of town is the home of the Great Geauga County Fair, that is held annually on Labor Day weekend.
